The Exorcist: Believer is a 2023 American supernatural horror film directed by David Gordon Green, who co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Sattler from a story by Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and Green. The sixth installment in The Exorcist franchise, it serves as a sequel to The Exorcist (1973). The film stars Leslie Odom Jr., Lidya Jewett, Olivia O’Neill in her film debut, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz and Ann Dowd along with Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair reprising their roles from the original film. Its plot follows a photographer who must confront the nadir of evil when his daughter and her best friend are possessed.

The film was released by Universal Pictures in the United States on October 6, 2023. It was previously set for October 13, before being moved up a week earlier to avoid competition with the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.

Plot

Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.) is a single father who has raised his daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett), on his own since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago. One day, Angela and her best friend Katherine (Olivia O’Neill) disappear into the woods. Three days later, they return with no memory of what happened to them.

Soon after, Angela and Katherine begin to exhibit strange behavior. They become violent and aggressive, and they speak in tongues. Victor realizes that something is terribly wrong, and he seeks out Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), the only person alive who has witnessed demonic possession firsthand.

Chris confirms that Angela and Katherine are possessed, and she agrees to help Victor save them. Together, they contact the Vatican, and a priest is sent to perform an exorcism.

Review

The Exorcist: Believer is a worthy successor to the original film. It is a terrifying and suspenseful film that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled. The performances are all excellent, especially from Leslie Odom Jr. and Lidya Jewett.

The film is also notable for its visual effects, which are some of the best ever seen in a horror film. The exorcism scenes are particularly disturbing, and they will make your skin crawl.

If you are a fan of horror films, then The Exorcist: Believer is a must-see. It is a terrifying and well-made film that will stay with you long after you have seen it.

Recommendation

I highly recommend The Exorcist: Believer to fans of horror films. It is a terrifying and well-made film with excellent performances and stunning visuals. However, it is important to note that the film is very graphic and disturbing, so it is not for the faint of heart.
